Quantum Mechanics on Spacetime I: Spacetime State Realism
نویسندگان
چکیده
What ontology does realism about the quantum state suggest? The main extant view in contemporary philosophy of physics is wave-function realism. We elaborate the sense in which wave-function realism does provide an ontological picture; and defend it from certain objections that have been raised against it. However, there are good reasons to be dissatisfied with wave-function realism, as we go on to elaborate. This motivates the development of an opposing picture: what we call spacetime state realism; a view which takes the states associated to spacetime regions as fundamental. This approach enjoys a number of beneficial features, although, unlike wave-function realism, it involves non-separability at the level of fundamental ontology. We investigate the pros and cons of this non-separability, arguing that it is a quite acceptable feature; even one which proves fruitful in the context of relativistic covariance. A companion paper discusses the prospects for combining a spacetime-based ontology with separability, along lines suggested by Deutsch and Hayden

Some notes on probability in quantum mechanics
(i) Ordinary objects (including people) can exist at what I call ’Schrödinger worlds’— worlds at which some sort of realism is true for configuration space(-time) as well as ordinary physical space(-time), where there is a wavefunction that always evolves in accordance with Schrödinger’s equation, and no surplus structure (‘hidden variables’) beyond what is summed up in the wavefunction. I use ...

The content of this paper is that of an invited plenary talk at the XVII SIGRAV Conference held in Torino, September 4-7, 2006. Some recent results obtained by the author and collaborators about QFT in asymptotically flat spacetimes at null infinity are reviewed. In particular it is shown that bosonic QFT can be defined on the null boundary I of any asymptotically flat spacetime M . This theory...

Bound and scattering state Schrödinger functions of nonrelativistic quantum mechanics as representation matrix elements of space and time are embedded into residual representations of spacetime as generalizations of Feynman propagators. The representation invariants arise as singularities of rational representation functions in the complex energy and complex momentum plane. The homogeneous spac...
متن کاملGeneralizing Quantum Mechanics for Quantum Gravity
How do our ideas about quantum mechanics affect our understanding of spacetime? This familiar question leads to quantum gravity. This talk addressed a complementary question: How do our ideas about spacetime affect our understanding of quantum mechanics? Familiar non-relativistic quantum theory illustrates how quantum mechanics incorporates assumptions about spacetime. The Schrödinger equation ...

In usual quantum theory, the information available about a quantum system is defined in terms of the density matrix describing it on a spacelike surface. This definition must be generalized for extensions of quantum theory which neither require, nor always permit, a notion of state on a spacelike surface. In particular, it must be generalized for the generalized quantum theories appropriate whe...
